Anti-Social Behaviour Measures
A number of measures to address anti-social behaviour by children were introduced in March 2007. They offer an alternative way of dealing with a child who acts in an anti-social way, other than going through the criminal process. The anti-social measures for children are different to those designed for adults.
The key features for children are:
- A series of stages before an anti-social behaviour order (ASBO) can be sought, including a warning, a good behaviour contract and referral to the Garda Juvenile Diversion Programme.
- Involvement by parents is required, particularly in the case of a good behaviour contract.
- An application for an order can only be made by a Garda (police officer) at a rank not below that of superintendent.
- The safeguards of the Children Act 2001 will apply.
